HOW TO MAKE BUTTER SLIME
This butter slime, crafted with Model Magic clay, is incredibly soft, spreadable, and easy to mold! Follow this simple recipe to create your own buttery slime.
MATERIALS
- 7.6 ounce White glue
- 1.5 Tablespoon Lotion
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
- 2 Tablespoons Water
- ~1 Tablespoon Acrylic paint (OPTIONAL)
- 2 teaspoons Contact lens solution
- 4 ounces Model Magic clay (ANY COLOUR)
EQUIPMENT
- Bowl
- Measuring spoons
- Spoon
INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1: FIND WHAT YOU NEED
Collect all the ingredients you’ll need.
STEP 2: MIX THE INGREDIENTS
Pour a full 7.6-ounce bottle of white glue into a bowl (an 8-ounce bottle will work as well).
Mix in 1.5 tablespoons of lotion, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, and 2 tablespoons of water with the glue.
Thoroughly stir the mixture until everything is fully combined.
STEP 3: ADD COLOUR (OPTIONAL)
Add approximately 1 tablespoon of acrylic paint to your slime mixture for color. If you’re using colored Model Magic clay, you can skip this step.
Stir until the color is uniform, then add more paint to achieve your desired hue. Remember, the color will lighten significantly once you add the clay.
STEP 4: ADD THE SLIME ACTIVATOR
Add 2 teaspoons of contact lens solution.
Stir until well combined and the mixture begins to thicken into a slime-like consistency. It will still be quite sticky and liquidy—avoid adding more activator unless it hasn’t thickened at all.
STEP 5: MIX IN THE CLAY
Unwrap a 4-ounce package of Model Magic clay.
Incorporate the clay into the slime by pressing it in.
Begin kneading the clay into the slime; this process will be messy and require considerable effort. You have two methods for incorporating the slime into the clay:
- Cover the clay with slime, then hold it above the bowl as you mix them together. Once combined, return the mixture to the bowl to cover it with more slime and repeat the process.
- Alternatively, pour the entire mixture out of the bowl and knead it together on a countertop, table, or baking sheet.
With enough kneading, you’ll blend the sticky liquid and clay into a beautifully soft, buttery slime.
Your butter slime is now ready!
WHAT TYPE OF GLUE SHOULD I USE TO MAKE BUTTER SLIME?
We highly recommend using Elmer’s School Glue for making slime. It consistently delivers excellent results, ensuring you get the desired outcome. While other brands of glue might work, we can’t guarantee that the slime will turn out as expected with the measurements provided in our recipe.
WHAT TYPE OF SLIME ACTIVATOR DO YOU RECOMMEND?
We prefer using contact lens solution in our slime recipes because it’s incredibly convenient. We use Renu Advanced Formula by Bausch + Lomb (known as Renu Fresh in Canada). For the slime to activate properly, the contact lens solution must contain boric acid. Since different brands may have varying amounts of boric acid, you might need to adjust the quantity of contact solution depending on the brand you use.
DO YOU NEED SHAVING CREAM TO MAKE BUTTER SLIME?
No, shaving cream isn’t necessary to make butter slime. While it can add a temporary foamy texture, the foam typically lasts only a few hours. Many butter slime recipes online include a small amount of shaving cream, but these small quantities generally don’t significantly alter the slime’s texture.
HOW LONG DOES BUTTER SLIME LAST?
If you store the slime in a plastic zip bag and squeeze out all the air before sealing it, it should remain soft for about 4 to 5 days before becoming a bit firmer. After that, it will still be squishy and enjoyable to play with, but it won’t be as soft and stretchy. Butter slime is definitely at its best on the first day you make it.
WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE MY BUTTER SLIME SOFT AGAIN?
Try placing the butter slime in a bowl of hot water and letting it sit for a few minutes. Once the water cools to a safe temperature, knead the slime in the water to make it soft and stretchy again.
You can also knead some hand lotion into the slime, or try using hair conditioner to make it soft again. It might take a little experimenting to find what works best. This butter slime is really fun to play with! It’s an easy recipe that kids will enjoy. You can make it yellow like real butter or add your favorite color!
If the butter slime starts losing its stretchiness, try putting it in a balloon to create a soft and satisfying stress ball.
